Today’s guest interview on blogging comes from the ever lively and helpful Adrienne Smith. Adrienne’s story is a relative short one. She only started seriously blogging at the start of this year. In the short time she was online with her presence, her business and blog has skyrocketed. It is quite normal to have 70-90 comments on any of her posts these days. This is a testimonial to her great desire to help others and also her willingness to embrace learning. Mind you, if Adrienne can do it at 50 (please correct me if I am wrong), any of us can and should. Please enjoy her inspiring story.
1. What is your blogging story? When did you start? Why did you start? Where are you heading?
First I want to thank you Jimmy for the opportunity to share more of my blogging history with your readers. Although my blog isn’t geared toward personal development, I do share with my readers my own struggles and lessons while on this blogging journey. Had it not been for personal development, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
On to my blogging story. I started my online journey about four years ago and stumbled my way through the first few years. I started in network marketing but I soon learned that I still had a lot of work to do on myself before I could succeed. From there I dove into affiliate marketing and was told that having a blog would be a great hub for me where I could write about what I was involved in and then introduce them to what I had to offer. If you look back on my earlier posts, you’ll see that my posts were so boring. I eventually decided to just blog about what I was learning and people seemed to relate more.
At the beginning of 2011 I started implementing blog commenting and from there my blog has just taken off. It has been a great place to meet other bloggers and people who are searching for the information that I share. As people get to know me, they become more interested in what I’m actually doing, which is how I’m bringing more people into my primary business (I did venture back into network marketing). I intend to continue growing my blog and eventually start creating my own products.
2. What were your major challenges and results from blogging?
The challenges that I faced, especially in the beginning, were that I was taught to just write about my niche which at that time was teaching people about affiliate marketing. I wrote my blog posts like I did my articles and although my articles were well received my posts weren’t. After about a year and a half I just decided to start writing about my own experiences in my own words. My posts started picking up a little steam after that switch.
3. How much can we reasonably expect to make from blogging? What are your dreams from blogging?
To me, blogging is more of a marketing tool. It’s a way to share what I know with my readers and build relationships. Although I do occasionally promote products and services, introducing people to who I am is my main goal. As people get to know me, they become more interested in what I actually do to make a full-time living online and that’s how I bring people into my primary business. I intend to continue along this same path and like I mentioned, eventually start creating my own products.
4. How can we best monetize our blog?
What I have learned from blogging is that when people start out they think that by throwing up some affiliate ads and Adsense on their site that is where the money is. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Sure, you may make a little here and there but trust me it’s not going to be much. Isn’t your main goal to keep people on your blog? You want to build up a readership and you can’t do that if they are clicking off on some Adsense ad where you might make $0.16.
Build up a good following on your blog first, consistently drive traffic to your blog and comment on other blogs so when new people visit they will see you as an authority figure. Start building a list even if you don’t feel you have anything to share if you are just starting out. Once your list starts to grow you can then start promoting products to your list that you believe they will find beneficial. After you have built up a good following, then put up some ads on your site but don’t overload them. I only promote products I have used and believe are worth introducing to my readers.
5. What’s the best way to get people coming back to our content?
Always add value so that when people visit your blog they walk away feeling like they’ve learned something from you or something you shared has helped them in some way. Take the time to build relationships with your readers. Be genuine in your comments on their blog and with your replies to the comments they leave on yours. That’s how you get people to start to know, like and trust you. That’s what is going to keep them coming back for more.
6. You mentioned, you spend about three hours each day on your blogs. Can you describe the blogging activities that you do routinely in these three hours? Are there any critical areas that must be done every day?
I have my main blog (adriennesmith.net) and then I have my affiliate blogs. For my main blog, the most time spent is usually replying to comments. It depends how many comments I receive as to how long I actually spend. I publish my posts every Monday and Thursday so those are my busiest commenting days.
I write my posts sometimes several days or even weeks ahead of time while other times it might be the night before. I’ll spend one to two hours on those posts. It all depends on what I’m writing about and if the words are flowing smoothly or not.
My affiliate blogs are a little different. I write content for them but not every day. I spend the majority of my time driving traffic to those blogs through various methods so the majority of my time isn’t actually spent on the blog itself. The initial setup of each blog is the most time consuming but once that is in place, updating them every so often is all that is really needed.
7. Rank in order the importance of your traffic generation strategies.
1) Commenting on other blogs is by far my favorite method of traffic generation and also number one in the traffic I receive. I get a lot of traffic from referring sites.
2) My second source is the search engines, people searching for specific keywords and locating my site. I also get a lot of searches for my name.
3) Twitter has now surpassed Facebook in driving traffic to my site. I do share a lot of people’s content plus I am a member of Triberr where my content is now in front of over a million followers.
4) Facebook is the fourth one on the list but I do get a good bit of traffic from people sharing my content and me posting it on my wall as well.
8. Describe some of the milestones in blogging for you. How did you feel for each milestone?
The first milestone has to be blog commenting. I never commented in the past because I always had the excuse that I didn’t have time. I joined a training community back in November of 2010 and they told us to start blog commenting. I told myself I was going to do it and I would just make the time. It only took about three months of consistently commenting on other people’s blogs before I started seeing my comments really start to rise. That was so exciting.
The second milestone had to be around May of this year. I started getting a lot of attention all of a sudden and people started reaching out to me. They considered me an expert in blogging and I was so flattered. I really had no idea that what I shared and what I was doing had impacted so many people. Since then I have built up some fabulous relationships with some wonderful bloggers and my life is even fuller now because of it. Those are the two that really stand out to me.
9. Could you share with us your monetary benefits from blogging? If you do not want to reveal any figures, a range will do.
As I mentioned, I use my main blog to connect with people so they will be more interested in learning what I do and how I earn my living. I don’t promote a lot of products through the blog itself. My primary business continues to grow because of these connections so this is the best way to use your blog to build a business.
I do have other sites set up promoting affiliate products and I do make a full-time income from those. My sales vary so the numbers change each month. My full-time income is still not where I would like it to be but I don’t have a lot of overhead.
10. Who are some of your favorite bloggers out there? Why do you like them?
There are so many fabulous bloggers that I have come in contact with so I don’t want anyone to think that because I haven’t listed them that I don’t think they aren’t special. But I do have three bloggers that are at the top of my list. I haven’t put them in any particular order so I’m not going to say I like one more than the other.
1) Carolyn Nicander Mohr of The Wonder of Tech
Carolyn writes about tech gadgets, cell phones, apps, you name it. She has been so very helpful to me in learning about these things because I am one of the most non-techie people you will ever meet. She thinks I am but to me, tech is about gadgets and I certainly don’t know much about those. She explains things in a way that someone like myself can understand and if I don’t, I just ask her and she is very patient in explaining it further. Because of her, I purchased my first iPod Touch. Had she actually promoted it on her site, I would have bought it from her. I consider Carolyn to be one of my best online friends now.
2) Christian Hollingsworth of Smart Boy Designs
Christian actually contacted me through email one day and thanked me for all the inspirational things that I share and he let me know that I continue to inspire him. I was so touched and actually none of us know who we help or who we inspire unless we are told. I have come to know Christian on a more personal level since that first encounter and he is such a bright, kind and talented young man. He’s so knowledgeable of the internet and actually started his own business at the age of ten. I have definitely learned so much from him and I also consider him a close friend.
3) Janet Callaway of Janet Callway.com
Janet is so wise and someone everyone can learn from. When she replies to a comment, you can definitely believe you will benefit from what she has shared. She reminds me a lot of my Dad who passed away over eight years ago. He always shared so much wisdom and Janet has a lot of those same qualities. In every post she writes, she really makes you think. I love that about her blog. She’s just a wonderful human being. I’m so blessed to know her.
11. What’s your view on those bloggers out there spinnning articles for posts and those who just leave short comments for backlinks?
I look at them two different ways.
First off, I’ve been in their shoes because when I first started I was taught to spin articles and post them all over the place but I didn’t know any better. So for those people until they know better they won’t do better.
Then you have those people who are only here for the money which is why they do what they do. In my opinion, their businesses will not be sustaining so they really are hurting no one but themselves. It’s too bad they are that way but not everyone is here for the same reasons.
This is one reason I recently implemented “My New Commenting Rules“. I no longer feel guilty for not approving comments where they put no thought into it or they are only at my place for the link juice. They can just go someplace else.
12. If there was any free advice you would give to a beginning blogger, what would those be?
Find something you enjoy blogging about because if you intend for your blog to be successful, you are going to have to continue to come up with good content.
Be consistent with writing your content, even if it’s just one post a week, and create a daily routine. Include commenting on other people’s blogs in your daily activities even if you can only visit two a day. Be genuine with your comments, share your own experiences with what you have learned (or haven’t for that matter) and stay true to yourself.
Be disciplined in your daily activities. Discipline trumps talent every single time. Create some type of content every single day and get it out there on the web. Whether it’s a blog post, article or video, produce that content. People are going to start seeing you everywhere and their curiosity will get the best of them.
Never ever give up!
13. Since you have started, how much have you invested in running your blogs? What are the things you invested on? Are there any tools that you feel is absolutely necessary?
Since I started I’ve created sites that didn’t work out so you can end up wasting money if you aren’t careful. But overall I only spend $7.95 for a new domain and then when it’s time to renew each one it only costs me around $8.60 a year. I’m a coupon fanatic!!! My hosting only costs me $6.95 a month and that supports all of my sites. To date I’ve only purchased two plug-ins and together those costs $12.90. Really cheap!
I did use a free theme when I started but you don’t have as much freedom being able to design it like you would like. On the recommendation of a friend, I purchased the Thesis theme and although it was challenging at first to figure it out, it’s a breeze now. I’ve been using it for probably two years now and there are just so many benefits to having this theme. It cost me $67 but I believe it’s recently increased in price.
If you are using your blog to build a business you have to build a list. In order to do that you will need an autoresponder service. I’ve never used a free service but I have tried both Get Response ($18 per month) and Aweber ($19 per month). Aweber is hands down the best one on the market period. I stand behind that service 110%.
And by the way guys, those are my affiliate links. This is how easy it can be to recommend products and services you use to others. As you continue to build relationships with your readers, they will learn to trust your opinion.
Thank you again so much Jimmy for this opportunity to share more about me with your readers. I do hope that some of what I’ve shared is helpful. I also enjoy helping people so if anyone has any questions or needs assistance, please don’t be bashful. I can always be contacted through the “Contact Me” form on my blog. It’s great to stay connected through blogging.
Great interview, Jimmy. Adrienne is quite sophisticated in her approach… I wish I had her blogging acumen! Blogging has been a rewarding experience for me in unexpected ways, in fact I didn’t really know what to expect so it has all been unexpected! The one overriding principal that I return to again and again is to just be authentic and offer up the best of YOU. Inspiring others to learn more about their unlimited nature helps me understand it about myself. Blogging is an inspiring journey when our new understanding of self is an understanding about everyone!

Hi Rob,
Thank you so much for commenting on my interview.
You know how I finally had to start over with my blogging approach Rob? I just started blogging about things I learn and in my own voice. I had no idea my content would go over so well. I’m sure not complaining, it’s been a sheer delight!
Sounds like you are having your own unique and inspirational journey too. I love hearing stories like that. I wish you the very best of luck with what is in store for you.
Thanks again.

Rob my Friend, I think we are all in the business of making people better or helping people. That’s definitely what you mean by been authentic right? My blogging journey on personal development is one of little help along the way as well. Adrienne and many of those I interviewed here are those who have helped me along the way to make my work better. They spared their time, took the trouble to go out of the way and really opened their hearts to me. I will be forever grateful. I have no doubt that in time to come, they will have a hand in more of my blog. You included too, Rob.
Hi Adrienne,
Great interview and introduction to you. I already just went to Janet’s site and commented on her wonderful piece on Success.
Thank you for your very helpful pointers. As a relatively new blogger (almost a year old), I’m still working hard at building traffic and community. I’m loving the work entailed but sometimes it does get a bit discouraging (I don’t even like to put that in writing; I strive to stay positive.) not getting ‘enough’ feedback. But I’m certainly staying with it; and I am getting some wonderful opportunities and making some great connections (like Jimmy here and my interview with him).
Hi Harriet,
Thank you and I appreciate that. Janet is a wonderful blogger and fabulous person. I have no doubt you’ll enjoy her blog as well.
I’ve been blogging for a couple of years but didn’t really kick it into gear until the beginning of this year. I call it my rebirth to be honest with you. I do consistently comment on other blogs and that’s how I started really building up the traffic and the attention. I think that since I stay really true to myself I believe that goes over a lot better than someone who blogs to just blog. Know what I mean? I’ll have to stop by your blog and read what you share.
Harriet, if I can be of assistance to you in any way, please let me know. I enjoy helping others reach their full potential. Just give me a shout any time.
Thank you again for your lovely comment. It’s greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

This is a great article! I just learned of Adrienne last month or something, and I’ve already learned so much from her. She really knows what she’s doing.
I’d love to earn a full-time income from blogging. I’m actually in the process of creating my own product right now, so we’ll see how that goes. I think that’s really where the money is, and the value. Blogging is like building relationships, and creating your own product is the money aspect.

Fred my friend, when you we cross paths with people like Adrienne, good things will happen. She will be one of those that you will go back to time and again and never be turned away.
Adrienne,
Wow, I had no idea you have only been blogging for less than a year. You have gotten a powerful following in a short time. It must say something about you and the way you react to and care for people. It shows!
Just about everything you talked about I agree with. Honestly I was looking for something to disagree with because I am in a disagreeable mood.
The only thing I could find is that my Facebook is not even close to #4 it is like 12-14th for me. But then again I do not make much of an effort on facebook…so results show.

Hi Steve,
Thanks Steve, I appreciate that. I’ve actually been blogging for about two years but was blogging to blog. I wasn’t writing to get attention to my blog and hardly received any visits at all. It wasn’t until January of this year that I kicked it into higher gear and within three months had a pretty good following. Just goes to show you that if you are consistent and disciplined, you will see great results.
Oh my goodness, you couldn’t find anything to disagree with me about? Wow, now I’m really impressed. Especially coming from you. I’m going to take that as good news.
Head over to some groups or fan pages and locate people who you think would be interested in what you have to share on Facebook. Send them a personal message and a friend request. Post your content on your wall along with other bloggers that you think your friends would want to learn from and they will start to be more interested in what you are all about. Next thing you know, they are hopping over to your blog and giving it a once over. Great little tip there for ya Steve. Hope you find it helpful.
Thanks again for sharing your thoughts about my interview. Really appreciate that!
Hope you’re having a great day!

Hi Adrienne,
On technical question if you do not mind on commenting. How do we actually reach out to other blogs and people to comment? I mean is there an effective system of reaching out? Do we comment on as many blogs as possible and go for a wide range? or is it alright juts to focus on some regular blogs? Are there blogs that you must comment on that will have an effect?
Hey Jimmy,
You can locate blogs in your niche by doing a search on Google or head to Christians new dofollow directory and then just start commenting on their posts. Most bloggers will visit your blog and comment as well which is how you start to build up relationships. I wouldn’t make it harder than it has to be so just start with about 5 blogs a day and comment. Always respond to the comments left on your blog as well.
There really is no right or wrong way to do this but you want to target more blogs that are related to your niche preferably. Google frowns upon too many links pointing to your blog that have nothing to do with your content.
This is why it’s not in your best interest to approve a lot of spam. It can hurt your blog more than help.
Adrienne recently posted..Get In On The CommentLuv Premium Giveaway
Ok, I am already throwing a lot of spam into the spam bins. Am already reaching out to many blogs and most of them are from the same niche. But I have also left some comments with interesting blogs as well. Guess what I am doing now is ok and in the right direction. Thanks
Hi Steve,
Adrienne does inspire us doesn’t she. Being a novice from the start. Now after only about year, she is already one of the most recognizable faces on the blogosphere. I think the key to her success is genuine help for others.
Hi Jimmy,
I apologize for just now getting over here. No excuse, time got away from me.

Hi Angel,
I would like to welcome you to Life Architects. Hope you will be a regular visitor here.
Adrienne and Jimmy, aloha. What a wonderful surprise to see Adrienne over here at your place, Jimmy. Because of Harriet coming over to visit my blog on Adrienne’s recommendation, I learned about this interview; thank you, Harriet.
Now, Adrienne, here is your biggest flaw that I see. You simply don’t toot your own horn enough. Were it not for Harriet, I wouldn’t even have this opportunity to say CONGRATULATIONS! Well Done! Pip, Pip! and all that.
As flaws go, that’s not such a bad one except that it deprives all of the people who love and support you with the opportunity to cheer for you in another venue. Not to worry, I will handle it from here by posting everywhere and tweeting.
Adrienne, thanks so much for your very kind words above; my heart melted when I read them. After I put myself back together, I did a cut and paste to save your message in my Sunshine File.
As far as I am concerned, Adrienne’s interview should be mandatory reading for anyone who wants to experience online success–heck, even offline success. The wise people who follow your advice, Adrienne, will save themselves much time and frustration. Since I too “own the t-shirt,” I appreciate the value of the wisdom you are sharing so freely.
Jimmy, thanks for asking one of the blogosphere’s most socially saavy people how to “do it right.”
Wishing you both a week that is filled with all things wonderful. Off to spread the word. Until next time, aloha. Janet

Hi Jimmy and Adrienne, Thanks so much, Jimmy, for an awesome interview of an awesome lady. I am not only honored to be mentioned by Arienne, I am honored to be mentioned with Janet and Chistian (thank you, Janet, for spreading the word about this article!).
Adrienne is a wonderful individual, not just for who she is but also for what she shares. She is open, genuine and caring. It’s no accident that her blogs consistenly have so many comments. People who visit her blog learn and share without fail.
I have to agree wtih Janet about Adrienne’s one flaw. Adrienne is genuinely humble and doesn’t even realize she is a tech expert. But she is. She may not be fluent in gadgets yet, but she knows plenty of other tech.
Jimmy, thanks for featuring this amazing lady to introduce her to others so that they can learn and love her blog!

But her shinning and helpful nature had prevailed. Till this day, I am still wondering how in the world does she find the time to do everything and be everywhere.
Adrienne, I am still awaiting that secret post on this subject of finding the time. ;-)
Carolyn, just to let you know that my wife has managed to backed up her precious iPhone photos. We did it the old fashion way. iTune is still quite a mystery for us.

I appreciate all your very kind words Carolyn. They really mean a lot as does your friendship as well. We’ll still disagree about that tech knowledge but that’s okay. I know who I have to come to for tech questions so glad you’ll always be there for me.
Thanks for stopping by and glad Janet put the word out. I got so busy that I hate to say I almost forgot Jimmy had published it today. Just lost track of time I guess.
I appreciate you young lady! Thanks again.

I’m so glad we did connect through Twitter and this is a prefect example of how to build up relationships with others. I enjoy helping people learn even if it’s something very small. Just think what consistent action will bring you!
I’m so happy to hear that you have recently connected also with Janet, Christian, and Carolyn. They really are not only wonderful people but share great content as well.
I appreciate all your kind words and thank you so much for contributing to this post. Always great to hear what others think.
Have a great day my friend.

Another great interview… BRAVO!
Adrienne I love your down to earth approach to blogging. And using blogging as a marketing tool to get to know and connect with people is a A+.
Jimmy – thanks again for another wonderful interview.

Hey JK,
Thank you, I appreciate that! I think a lot of people use blogging as a way to “make money” when if they used it accordingly, they could benefit is so many other ways. Thank you for recognizing that.
Have a wonderful day JK.

Jk,
Thanks for the support again. Your presence mean a lot to me and Adrienne. I love your side hustle article. Is there something on the rear hustle???
Great interview with Adrienne, and I find it interesting that you have multiple blogs, as I do, but some specifically geared towards affiliate sales and the like. I’m interested in knowing how those are different than your main blog; I assume you spend enough time working on posts for those as well. Great stuff all around.

Hi Mitch,
Thanks for visiting. I do not keep multiple blogs. Adrienne does that very well doesn’t she? I will let her explain more.
Hi Jimmy, thank you so much for passing the link to this interview on to me, it has been really helpful.
You asked some really great questions here and Adrienne has shared some great advice. I found it interesting that she had a few years online before it started taking off for her.
I have been visiting Adrienne’s blog for some time now and have really grown to Know, Like and trust her, but then it has grown even more in to admiration and respect. She is my number one blogger (but please don’t tell her that ha ha).
I’m building up to interview Adrienne myself and am just working on the questions to ask so as to pick her brains for all those that are struggling online.
Great interview Jimmy, thanks again for passing the link onto me. Sorry I’m late getting here in responce, that’s another area that Adrienne impresses me with, her speed.
Take care Jimmy,
Barry

Barry,
Not to worry about discovering this interview with Adrienne late. Her wonderful interview will always be around for people to find.
I cannot agree with you more regarding the blogging exploits of this wonderful lady. She has pure passion to help and you can sense this in every bit about her, from her posts to comments to the real life videos she created. If anyone ask what is the secret of success and happiness, it is what she has shown us – helping people with a genuine heart. I think we have all learnt a great deal about her.
I am looking forward to your interview as well.
Cheers
